About Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett National Park, part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve, is a project located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand Tiger Reserve. Corbett's magical landscape is well-known and imaginative for its tiger richness. Founded in 1936 as Hailey National Park, Corbett has the distinction of being the oldest and most prestigious national park in India. It is also being touted as the site where Project Tiger was first launched in 1973. This unique tiger region is known as the most endangered species and the birth father of Project Tiger in India for protecting the Royal Tigers of India.

Spread over 520 sq km, its entire area consists of hills, wetlands, river belts, grasslands, and large lakes. It is one of the few tiger reserves in India that allows for overnight stays in the lap of national parks. Nature observation and wildlife watching in the park are done in an open four-wheeled jeep and on the back of an elephant. With a healthy population of tigers and shelters for rare species such as Attar and local fish-eating crocodiles, the national park is one of the most preferred destinations for wildlife lovers. Jhikala is the most popular destination on the border of the vast Patil Dun Valley.
