The Airbus A380 is a large wide-body airliner built and manufactured by Airbus. It is the largest passenger aircraft in the world. The study of Airbus began in 1988, and the project was announced in 1990 to challenge the Boeing 747's dominance in the long-distance market. The then nominated A3XX project was presented in 1994; Airbus launched the 3 9.5 billion ($ 10.7 billion) A380 program on December 19, 2000. The first prototype was unveiled in Toulouse on January 18, 2005, with the first flight on April 27, 2005. It then received its type certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency. (EASA) and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 12 December 2006. Due to electrical wiring problems, initial production was delayed by two years and development costs nearly doubled.

It was first delivered to Singapore Airlines on 15 October 2007 and entered service on 25 October. Production peaked at 30 per year in 2012 and 2014. However, the biggest customer, Emirates, after reducing its last order in February 2019, Airbus has announced that A380 production will end in 2021. On 16 December 2021, Emirates received its 123rd A380, the 251st and last delivered by Airbus. The $ 25 billion investment has not recovered.

The full-length double-deck aircraft has a common seat for 525 passengers, with a certified capacity of a maximum of 853 passengers. The quadjet is powered by engine Alliance GP7200 or Rolls-Royce Trent 900 turbofans that provide a range of 8,000 nmi (14,800 km). As of December 2021, the global A380 fleet has completed more than 800,000 flights in 7.3 million block hours, resulting in no casualties and no damage.

In mid-1988, Airbus engineers, led by Jean Roder, began working secretly to build an ultra-high-powered airliner (UHCA), both to complete its own product range and to break the dominance Boeing enjoyed in the market. The segment with its 747 in the early 1970s. Lockheed was exploring the possibility of a very large subsonic transport. After a formal presentation to the President and CEO in June 1990, Roder was approved for further evaluation of the UHCA.
