Maasai Mara National Reserve, a National park in Kenya

Maasai Mara, sometimes also known as Masai Mara and locally known as The Mara, is a large national game reserve adjacent to the Serengeti National Park in Naro, Kenya. It is named in honor of the Masai people, the ancestral inhabitants of the area, who migrated from the Nile basin to the area. Their description of the area when viewed from a distance: "Mara" in the local Masai language means "spotted", due to the many small shrubs that make up the landscape point.

Maasai Mara is one of the most famous and important wildlife sanctuaries and desert areas in Africa, world-famous for its exceptional populations of lions, African leopards, cheetahs and African bush elephants. It also hosts the Great Migration, which has secured it as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa and one of the Ten Wonders of the World.

The larger Mara ecosystem includes the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the Mara Triangle, and several Masai archives, including Koiaki, Lamek, Ol Choro Oiroua, Mara North, Olkinei, Siyana, Maji Moto, Naikara, Ol Derkesi, Kerinkni, and Ololo and Kimintet.

Wildlife of Maasai Mara National Reserve

Wildebeest, hats, zebras, and Thomson's gazelles migrate and occupy the Mara Reserve, south to the Serengeti Plain and north-east of the Loita Plain to pastoral farms from July to October or later. Livestock of three species also live in the reserve.

All members of the "Big Five" (lions, leopards, elephants, Cape buffaloes, black and white rhinos) are found here all year round. The population of black rhinos was fairly large until the 1960s, but it declined drastically as a result of poaching in the 1970s and early 1980s, dropping to 15 people. The number is slowly increasing, but in 1999 the population was approximately 23 people. Masai Mara is the only protected area in Kenya where an indigenous black rhino population is not affected by migration and is able to support one of the largest populations in Africa due to its size.

Wildebeest are the dominant inhabitants of Masai Mara and number in the millions. Every year around July, these animals migrate north from the Serengeti Plain in search of fresh pastures and return to the south in October. The Great Migration is one of the most fascinating natural phenomena in the world, with about 1,300,000 blue wildlife, 500,000 Thomson gazelles, 97,000 hats, 18,000 common eels and 200,000 Grant zebras. Masai Mara is run by the Narok County Government. The more visited eastern part of the park, known as the Masai Mara National Reserve, is managed by Hell County Council.

Masai Mara is a major research center for spotted hyenas. The Mara Predator Project also works on the Masai Mara, enumerating and monitoring the lion population throughout the region.

Tourism in Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara is one of the most famous safari destinations in Africa. The entry fee is currently US $ 70 per 24 hours for adult non-East African residents (if living in a property inside the reserve) or the US $ 80 if outside the reserve, and $ 40 for children. There are a number of lodges and tent camps for tourists within or near the boundaries of the reserve and in the various separate archives within the boundaries of the original reserve. However, the main reserve is also fenced along the border of Serengeti (Tanzania), which means there is free movement of wildlife throughout the ecosystem.

Although one-third of the entire Masai Mara is in the western part of the Greater Reserve, there are only two permanent lodges within the boundaries of the Mara Triangle, such as Mara Serena Lodge and Little Governors Camp (compared to the numerous camps and lodges near Narok) and well maintained all-weather gravel roads. The Rangers patrol regularly which means less smuggling and nice play here. There is also strict control over the number of vehicles in the vicinity of animal watching, which allows for a better experience when going out on a game drive. Most lodges in the region charge high rates during the migration season, although Masai Mara is home to plenty of wildlife throughout the year.

There are a number of airfields serving Maasai Mara camps and lodges, including Mara Serena Airstrip, Musiara Airstrip and Kikorok, Kichwa Tembo, Engerende Airport, Ol Kyumbo and Angama Mara Airstrips, and several other airlines such as Safarilink and AirCarel. Somewhere more than once a day. Helicopter flights over the reserve are limited to a minimum altitude of 1,500 feet.

Game drives are the most popular activity of Masai Mara, but other activities include hot air ballooning, walking in nature, photographic safaris and cultural experiences.

The BBC television program "Big Cat Diary" was filmed in Masai Mara. The show followed the lives of big cats living in the reserve. The show features scenes from the Musiyara Marsh area of the reserve and the separation of Serengeti and Masai Mara from the Leopard Gorge, Fig Tree Ridge area and the Mara River.
