About Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble tomb on the right bank of the river Jamuna in Agra, India. It was started in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (r. 1628-1658) for the burial of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal; Shahjahan's tomb is also here. The tomb is the centerpiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is housed in a formal garden surrounded on three sides by a wall.

Construction of the tomb was originally completed in 1643, but work on other phases of the project continued for another 10 years. The Taj Mahal Complex is thought to have been completed in 1653 with an estimated value of ₹ 32 million, which will be approximately ₹ 70 billion (approximately US $ 1 billion) by 2020. About 20,000 artisans were employed in the construction project under the direction of an architect board headed by the architect of the court of Emperor Ustad Ahmad Lahore. A variety of symbols have been used in Taj to reflect the natural beauty and divinity.

The Taj Mahal was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being "the jewel of Indian Muslim art and one of the universally acclaimed masterpieces of world heritage". It is considered by many to be one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture and a symbol of India's rich history. The Taj Mahal attracts more than 6 million visitors a year [3] and in 2007, it was declared the winner of the 7 New Wonders of the World (2000-2007) initiative.

Who was built the Taj Mahal?

The Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan in 1631 in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died on June 17 of that year, giving birth to their 14th child, Gauhara Begum. The tomb construction began in 1632 and the tomb was completed in 1648, while the surrounding buildings and gardens were completed five years later. The royal court recorded Shahjahan's grief after Mumtaz Mahal's death and portrayed the love story held as the inspiration for the Taj Mahal.
