Tugela Falls, the high waterfall in the world

Tugela Falls is a complex of seasonal waterfalls located in Drakensberg (Dragon Mountains) in the Royal Natal National Park in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in the Republic of South Africa. By some measures, it is the longest waterfall in the world. A revised validity of waterfall measurements is not available, and there is still uncertainty as to whether Tugela or Angel Falls in Venezuela is the longest (both measurements were taken at considerable distances from the two waterfalls).

The combined total drop of its five distinct free-leaping waterfalls is officially 948 meters (3,110 feet). In 2016, however, a Czech scientific expedition took new measurements, making the falls 983 meters (3,225 feet) tall. The data was sent to the World Waterfall Database for confirmation. The source of the Tugela River (Zulu for ‘sudden’) is the Mont-Ox-Sources Plateau which extends a few kilometers outside the amphitheater escarpment from which the waterfalls descend.

There is an argument that Tugela Falls is the tallest waterfall in the world, rather than the commonly quoted Angel Falls. This argument is based on two possible errors regarding the estimated height of the corresponding waterfall.

The initial height of Angel Falls is often given as 1,500 m (4,900 ft), from where the waterfalls sink in a vertical 807 m (2,648 ft), then go to the cascade for about 0.4 km (0.25 mi), with a relatively slight decrease in height, before, The final drop of 30 meters (98 feet) below the Talus Rapid near the famous view known as Mirador Laime.

Angel Falls, however, is almost universally considered to be the longest single continuous drop of any waterfall in the world (the total height of Tugela Falls, though probably the longest in the world, is divided into five smaller layers and its longest individual level is 411 m (1,348 ft)). Although this measurement invites some controversy, some botanical sources generally list Angel Falls as the longest drop at 738 meters (2,421 feet) without quoting 807 meters (2,648 feet).

Access to Tugela Falls

At the right time of year, waterfalls are easily visible in the park from the main road, especially after heavy rains. Immediately after the waterfall is an undeveloped campsite and mountain hut.

Tugela Falls has two trails. The most spectacular trail is at the top of Mont-Ox-Sources, starting at "The Sentinel" car park (with Futhaditzaba at R57, about two hours by car from Royal Natal National Park and 74 minutes, 90 minutes from Harristhith to 90 minutes from Harristhith 712 from the path, or 80 minutes from Golden Gate Highlands National Park). From here it is a relatively easy climb to the top of the amphitheater, but it takes about 4.5 to 8 hours round-trip, depending on the fitness level. Access to the summit is through two chain ladders. This is the only day hiking trail that takes you to the top of the Drakensberg Escort. Another trail at the foot of Tugela Falls starts from the Royal Natal National Park. Tugela Ghat winds a gradient through a simple 7 km (4.3 miles) of indigenous forests. The last part of raising the rent for Tugela Falls is a boulder hop. In a series of five cascades, a small chain ladder extends to the final view of the waterfall running down the amphitheater.
